The Last Goodbye

Two years ago today, I looked at my son for the last time. I hugged him, we told each other we loved one another, and I said goodbye in the parking lot between the Liberty track and the baseball field.
This morning, a memory popped up from ten years before that day, and it made me completely lose it. It was just the two of us on the Blackwater trails downtown behind Rivermont. We used to explore every single inch of those dirt paths together. Seeing that little boy on a bike, and then remembering the man he became walking beside me at Liberty, is absolutely gut-wrenching.
I thank God for the deep, necessary healing He has brought me this summer. I wake up every day trying to joyfully do His will, and He continues to move in my life. But on days like today, the calendar acts as a time machine, and I am pulled right back to the bottom of the pit. Some wounds simply do not close on this side of eternity.
I miss you so much, son. I really hope there are mountain biking trails in heaven.
