The Strict Fast, Ticking Clocks, and Eternal Faithfulness

I have been on a strict fast since Sunday. When you completely cut off the flesh's access to comfort and fuel, the physical hunger quickly gives way to a sharp, unavoidable spiritual clarity. Fasting strips away the noise. It forces you to confront the things that are actually sustaining you—and the things that are stressing you out.

This morning, a stark reminder of the world's ticking clocks popped onto my screen. It was an alert for the BofA Visa ending in 1271. The 0.00% promotional APR on the $2,977.93 balance expires on November 23. If it isn't cleared by then, the rate is going to skyrocket to a 23.74% variable APR.

In the grand scheme of eternity, it is just a credit card balance. It is just another number in the blueprint to wipe out my debt by the end of the year. But in the middle of a strict fast, when your physical defenses are lowered, the enemy loves to use these manufactured deadlines to inject anxiety. He wants me looking at a November 23rd expiration date instead of looking at the eternal timeline of God.

But God always provides the exact counter-weight we need in His Word.

Today is Day 153 of the reading plan, covering Isaiah 9 through 12 and Psalm 3. Psalm 3 is a cry from David when he was fleeing for his life, feeling completely overwhelmed by his enemies, yet he declares, "But you, Lord, are a shield around me."

Then, the Verse of the Day completely anchored me. Psalm 100:5 popped up, declaring, "For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations".

The bank gives a temporary grace period that expires in November. God offers a love that endures forever. The world's systems are constantly threatening to penalize us, but God's faithfulness continues through all generations.

Reading that promise about "all generations" while fasting brought a wave of peace over me regarding Cash. The faithfulness of God did not end with my son's tragic passing; it encompasses him in eternity, and it sustains me here on earth. The fast is doing exactly what it is supposed to do: starving the anxiety of the flesh to feed the absolute assurance of the spirit.

Psalm 100:5 (NIV): "For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations."

Isaiah 12:2 (NIV): "Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation."

O - Observation

The world operates on expiration dates, fluctuating interest rates, and temporary promotions. Everything is subject to change and decay. In absolute contrast, God's goodness and love are permanent. His faithfulness is an unbroken chain that links all generations together. Because He is our defense and salvation, we are commanded to trust Him and reject fear, even when external pressures loom.

A - Application

As I continue this strict fast, I must actively shift my gaze from the temporary to the eternal. Yes, I need the discipline to execute my business plans and pay off that $2,977.93 balance before November 23 to avoid the 23.74% APR penalty. God expects me to be a good steward of my finances. But I absolutely refuse to let that number dictate my peace. My security is not found in a zero balance; it is found in the enduring love of the Lord. I will use the physical hunger of this fast as a constant trigger to praise Him for His generational faithfulness.

P - Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the clarity that comes from fasting. As my flesh grows weak, let my spirit grow undeniably strong. Lord, I surrender my financial goals and looming deadlines to You. Give me the extreme focus to handle my debts with wisdom and discipline, but do not let financial anxiety take root in my heart. Thank You that Your love endures forever and that Your faithfulness covers my family across all generations. Be my shield today, and give me the endurance to finish this fast honoring You.
